Lady Crusaders roll to 5-0 soccer win vs. Waynesville

It took a few minutes to get the attack rolling.

But once it did, it rolled.

The Helias Lady Crusaders scored five goals in the final 27 minutes of the first half Tuesday night on their way to a 5-0 victory against the Waynesville Lady Tigers at the Crusader Athletic Complex.

"When we start attacking, we can be a dangerous team," Helias coach Jay Hebenheimer said.

Helias got on the board with a goal by Morgan Yanskey, followed about four minutes later by a score from Hannah Loethen. Maya Heckert assisted on both goals.

The Lady Crusaders scored two goals in quick succession later in the half, tallied by Bailey Henson and Lainy Lamb. Reese Hamilton closed the barrage with a goal in the final seconds of the half.

"We were serving some dangerous balls, I think we left some goals out there that maybe we should have had," Hebenheimer said.

The style was a stark contrast from Saturday afternoon's season-opener, a 9-0 loss to Quincy Notre Dame in which Helias struggled to get anything dangerous on the offensive end.

"That was our first game of the season and I don't think we were as prepared to play as we should have been," Hebenheimer said. "That's on me as much as it is on them."

The Lady Crusaders changed their playing style in the final 40 minutes.

"We were playing for more possession, a possession-style game," Hebenheimer said. "I thought maybe we could score one or two more, but it was a chance to work on some things."

Ally Webb got the shutout in goal for the Lady Crusaders.

"This should really get her some confidence, it's hard to get a shutout in any 80-minute game," Hebenheimer said. "She made some saves and did what we asked her to do back there."

Hebenheimer said Webb, a junior, will be the starter in goal for the rest of the season. Emilee Nappier, who went through the preseason working at goalkeeper, will move to a position on defense. Kaitlyn Buker, a freshman, will be the reserve keeper.

Tuesday night's win should be a boost in confidence for the Lady Crusaders.

"All we want to do is take another step up that ladder and I think we did that in this game," Hebenheimer said.

Helias (1-1) will play Thursday at St. Joseph's Academy before returning home Saturday to take on Camdenton. Waynesville is now 0-3.

In Tuesday's JV game, Helias defeated Waynesville 9-0. Savannah Feltrop and Madelyn Berhorst had three goals each to pace the Lady Crusaders (1-0).
