Defense leads Lady Jays past Troy in district title game

WENTZVILLE - The Jefferson City Lady Jays claimed their second consecutive district basketball title Thursday night, downing Troy 39-23 in the Class 5 District 7 championship game.

"It wasn't the prettiest offensive game we've played this season, but it may be the best defensive game we've played." Jefferson City coach Brad Conway said.

Jefferson City led 11-6 after one quarter. Tori LePage opened the second quarter with a 3-pointer for the Lady Jays, who led 21-11 at the half.

Troy made just four field goals and had 11 turnovers in the first two quarters.

The top-seeded Lady Jays led 33-19 after three quarters.

Kara Daly paced Jefferson City (21-6), which has won 14 straight games, with 15 points. Caitlin Anderson added 10 points.

Troy, the No. 2 seed in the tournament, ends its season at 16-10.

The Lady Jays will face the winner of tonight's District 8 title game between Francis Howell Central (21-5) and Fort Zumwalt West (7-16) in the sectionals Wednesday. Francis Howell Central is the No. 1 seed, while Fort Zumwalt West is seeded third.

The sectional game is slated for a 6 p.m. start at Maryville University in St. Louis.

In the Class 5 District 7 boys title game Thursday night, second-seeded Battle edged fourth-seeded Holt 72-68 in overtime to advance to Wednesday night's sectional game.
