Post 5 Auxiliary team finishes 4-1 at Ballwin tourney

BALLWIN, Mo. - The Jefferson City Post 5 Auxiliary team came in second place Sunday in the Baseball Battles Cancer Tournament, falling 8-1 to Eureka Post 177 in the championship game at the Ballwin Athletic Complex.

Jefferson City has a 7-4 record, going 4-1 in tournament play.

Post 5 finished pool play late Saturday night, defeating host Ballwin 8-1 to secure a spot in the semifinals. Jefferson City went 2-1 in pool play.

Post 5 put the game out of reach with a four-run fifth inning and added three more runs in the seventh.

Landon Dunlap had a two-run single to right field to highlight the fifth inning. Christian Fernandez added a two-run triple to center field in the seventh.

Austin Wegman was the winning pitcher. In five innings, he allowed one run on two hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Josef Keilholz threw the last two innings and gave up one hit and two walks while striking out three.

Dunlap was the only player with multiple hits for Post 5, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

In Sunday's semifinal game, Post 5 matched up against the winner of the other pool, Alton, Ill., Post 126.

Jefferson City broke a 3-all tie with a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and added another run in the seventh to win 5-3.

Post 5 held a 3-0 lead after three innings. Colin Metz had an RBI single in the third and Keilholz was also hit by a pitch that inning to force in a run.

Alton scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game. Jefferson City took the lead for good with a bases-loaded walk in the fifth and Dunalp scored an insurance run on an error in the seventh.

Dunlap and Metz each had two singles.

Ethan Adrian went six strong innings to earn the win for Post 5. He gave up three runs on eight hits and walked two while striking out seven. Jacob Crede closed the seventh to get the save.

In the title game, Eureka never trailed, scoring four times in the top of the first inning against Crede. Eureka was held to just three hits but also drew seven walks.

Jefferson City's only run came in the bottom of the second, as Austin Wegman scored on a two-out error.

Dunlap went 3-for-4 with three singles and Wegman was 2-for-2 with one single and one double.

Crede struck out three in the first three innings. Ian Northway and Christian Fernandez each struck out one in two innings of relief.
