Jays fifth after first day of Capital City Invitational

The Jefferson City Jays are in fifth place after Friday's opening action in the Capital City Invitational at Fleming Fieldhouse.

The Jays, who are open at three weights, totaled 51 team points on the first day of the Invitational. Park Hill leads with 66, four points better than Lafayette and five ahead of Lebanon. Raymore-Peculiar is fourth in the nine-team event with 59.

Garrett Butel of the Jays was 3-0 with two wins by fall at 106 pounds. Reece Neighbors at 152 and Nate McKaye at 285 were both 2-0. Both of McKaye's wins were by fall. Ian Cote won his lone match at 195 by fall.

Going 2-1 for the Jays were Will Kuster at 138 and Peter Kuster at 145. Corey Denny at 170 and Brandon Backes at 220 were both 1-1. Jeremiah Wallace dropped his lone match at 113, while Elijah Jackson was 0-2 at 182 and Troy Sebra was 0-3 at 160.

The Jays are open at 120, 126 and 132.

Action will continue with pool matches this morning. The championship and third-place matches should begin around 3 p.m.
