With a little more than a second remaining Friday night, the Helias Lady Crusaders were 94 feet from a potential victory.

An 80-foot pass later, potential turned into reality.

Taylor Koelling scooped up Catherine Conley's long inbound pass and her layup gave the Lady Crusaders a 53-51 victory against the Moberly Lady Spartans at Rackers Fieldhouse.

Just like it was drawn up?

"Not really," Helias coach Alan Lepper admitted. "We wanted to go long, but not like that."

On the play, Conley's pass bounced off the floor around the free throw line toward the Helias basket. Koelling then grabbed the loose ball and put up the game-winner.

"Taylor is going to go get the ball and she did there," Lepper said.

The smartest part of the play was letting the ball bounce to keep the clock from starting and get closer to the basket.

"She made the play when we needed it," Lepper said.

The bucket capped a wild finish that saw the biggest lead for either team being two points in the final four minutes.

A three-point play by Erin Wyrick with a little more than four minutes left gave Helias its first lead since late in the second quarter at 44-43.

The two teams swapped points the rest of the way. Moberly took a 51-49 lead with 1:01 to play on a pair of free throws by Sydney Baughman. Conley then tied the game on a layup with :47 remaining.

The Lady Spartans ran down the clock before a shot bounced over the top of the backboard and out of bounds under their own basket with just more than second left to set up the game-winner.

Moberly didn't score a basket in the fourth quarter, getting all 11 points at the free-throw line. Helias was 6-of-11 from the field in the quarter and was 6-of-9 from the stripe.

"It seemed like we were either getting a good look at the basket or going to the line," Lepper said.

Helias finished 15-of-23 at the line.

"We've got to get better, we've been working on them and we're going to continue to work on them," Lepper said.

Lauren Alexander stepped up on the offensive end for Helias, scoring a team-high 19 points.

"She came out with some energy in practice this week and she was taking a leadership role during timeouts," Lepper said. "You have to be happy with that."

Wyrick added 18 for the Lady Crusaders, who had just five turnovers Friday night.

"That's impressive, I'll take that in a game any time," Lepper said.

Mary Billington had a game-high 20 point for Moberly (7-2), while Sydney Flood added 18. Flood had 11 of those points in the third quarter.

"She's a phenomenal player," Lepper said. "She's their go-to player, she put them on her back."

The Lady Crusaders improve to 7-6 on the season.

"Sometimes you can look back and see a game or two where things really turned around for you, got you going," Lepper said. "I think maybe the past week can be that for us."

Helias is back in action Tuesday against St. James in the opening round of the California Tournament. The two teams met last month, with Helias taking a 49-35 victory in the third-place game at the Sullivan Tournament

"It's a different game and we're going to have to play well," Lepper said.

Game time is 6 p.m. Tuesday.

In Friday's JV game, Helias defeated Moberly 45-27. Madisyn Hood, Marissa Nienhueser and Grace Winegar all had six points for the Lady Crusaders.
