Helias will have four state wrestling medalists

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Helias Crusaders will finish with four medalists at the Class 3 state wrestling championships.

The four - Evan Winder at 120 pounds, Zack Carr at 132, Jackson Careaga at 152 and Nick Schnieders at 160 - can finish anywhere from third to sixth in their respective weights today after action Friday night at Mizzou Arena.

Schnieders dropped a 15-6 decision to Andrew Gamble of Belton in the semifinals.

Gamble led 4-1 after one period and extended his advantage to 11-3 after two. Schnieders scored his final points on three escapes in the third period.

Schnieders is 47-12, while Gamble is 51-2 on the season.

Schnieders advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4 win in overtime Friday afternoon against Logan Zimmerman of DeSoto.

Schnieders trailed 2-0 after two periods and 4-1 just :09 into the third. But he got an escape, then a takedown with :38 left in the third to send the match to overtime tied at 4. Schnieders then got a takedown midway through the first overtime period to get the win.

Winder started Friday with a 3-2 loss in overtime to Blake Bills of Platte County in the quarterfinals. Each wrestler had an escape during regulation to send the match to overtime tied at 1. Bills got a reversal in the second overtime to make it 3-1. Winder then got an escape in the third overtime to make the final 3-2.

In the second round of wrestlebacks, Winder advanced with a win by fall in :40 against Carter Sickmeier of Union. In the third round of wrestlebacks Friday night, Winder jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period on his way to a 9-0 victory against Callum Sitek of Pacific.

Winder is 25-9.

Carr won two wrestleback matches Friday for the Crusaders.

The senior won by fall in 1:48 against Ben Leach of Wentzville: Liberty before posting a 5-4 win in overtime against Gage Kassing of Pacific in the third round of wrestlebacks. Kassing led 2-1 after two periods before Carr scored three points in the third period to send the match to overtime tied at 4. Carr then got an escape point in the third overtime period for the win.

Carr is 43-14.

Careaga rebounded from a 3-2 loss to Joe Biondo of Belton in the quarterfinals Friday afternoon to win his next two matches.

The sophomore was a 3-0 winner against Kade Hicks of Webb City before edging Taylor Huwar of Grain Valley 2-1 in overtime Friday night. Careaga and Huwar each had an escape during regulation. Careaga then got an escape in extra time for the victory.

Careaga is now 42-12.

Helias has 39 points and is 11th in the team standings.

The fourth round of wrestlebacks will start at 10 a.m. today, followed by the third- and fifth-place matches around noon.
