Blair Oaks advances two to medal rounds

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Blair Oaks Falcons' performances at the Class 1 state wrestling tournament were as different as day and night.

Friday's morning session at Mizzou Arena couldn't have gone any better, but the evening session couldn't have gone much worse for the Falcons.

Blair Oaks' three wrestlers secured wins - including two that secured medal finishes - during the morning session.

Junior Dalton Bridges will medal for a second straight season after winning 13-3 against Marceline's Colton Nelson in the quarterfinals at 126 pounds.

Bridges had a takedown and two nearfalls to lead 7-1 after the first period. He would add three more takedowns to win by major decision.

Sophomore Kyler Griep secured a medal with a pin in :51 against Centralia's Grafton Littrell, who is ranked No. 3 in the state at 152.

Griep recorded a takedown early in the first period and wasted little time to get the fall against Littrell.

Ben Thomas won a 6-4 decision against Maysville's Dalton Wade in the second-round wrestlebacks at 145.

The score was tied a 2 through two periods, but Thomas got an early escape in the third quarter and added a takedown about a minute later to extend his lead to 5-2.

That was the good. Next came the bad, as the Blair Oaks trio lost all three matches Friday evening.

Bridges suffered a 12-5 defeat to Lathrop's Tristan Blair in the semifinals. After no scoring in the first round, Blair scored the first six points of the second period. Bridges had a reversal and 3-point nearfall to close the gap to 6-5, but he was unable to score the rest of the match.

Griep lost by major decision, 11-2, to Seneca's Dayton Fields in the semifinals. Fields is ranked No. 2 at 152. Griep tied the score at 2 in the second period, but Fields was able to get a reversal and 3-point nearfall later in the period to regain his lead.

Thomas' season ended in the third-round wrestlebacks with a 6-3 loss to Braeden Campbell of Summit Christian Academy. Thomas ended at 42-12.

Campbell got a takedown in the first period and led the rest of the match. Bridges fell behind 4-1 after two periods but got a takedown midway through the third.

Through the second day of competition, Blair Oaks is tied with Fatima in 18th place in the team standings with 25 points.

Blair Oaks' remaining two wrestlers will compete next in the fourth-round wrestlebacks, which are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. today. The fifth- and third-place matches will follow at noon.
