Eldon goes 4-for-4 in Class 2 first round at state wrestling

COLUMBIA, Mo. - The opening day of the Class 2 state wrestling championships couldn't have gone much better for the Eldon Mustangs on Thursday at Mizzou Arena.

With four first-round wins - including one by fall and another by technical fall - Eldon is tied for 15th place in the team standings with 13.5 points.

Odessa and Ste. Genevieve are tied for the team lead with 25 points. Mexico is third with 23.5 points and Moberly is fourth with 23.

Isaiah Simmons won by fall in 5:22 against St. Clair's Dalton Thompson at 120 pounds, while Trenton Dillon WBTF in 5:14 against John Liberto of St. Pius X: Kansas City in the 160 bracket.

Dawson Brandt won by medical forfeit at 192 and Kaden Dillon won a 6-0 decision against Mexico's Hale Fuemmeler to give the Mustangs a 4-0 start.

Today's quarterfinal matchups for the Mustangs are:

Simmons (38-11) vs. Chillicothe senior Zackary Boyles (29-18).

Trenton Dillon (22-0) - ranked No. 1 at 160 - vs. Moberly junior Luke Slater (41-9).

Brandt (50-8) - ranked No. 2 at 182 - vs. Oak Grove senior Joel Martin (35-13), ranked No. 6.

Kaden Dillon (43-12) - ranked No. 5 at 195 - vs. St. Joseph Benton senior Curtis Weston (42-3), ranked No. 3.

The quarterfinals are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. today, followed by second-round wrestlebacks.

School of the Osage's Austin Magnuson, the Indians' only state qualifier, picked up a first-round win to reach the quarterfinals.

Magnuson, ranked No. 4 at 152, won 4-0 against Owensville's Blaine Schoenfeld. Magnuson (35-2) will face Kansas City Center senior Daylyn Snelling (37-8) in the quarterfinals today.

The Fatima Comets and Versailles Tigers each advanced two wrestlers past the first day of the Class 1 state championships.

Lucas Laux won by fall in 1:09 against Adam Runge in the first round at 113 pounds. Laux (35-5), ranked No. 3 in Class 1, will face Lathrop sophomore Tanner Dalinghaus (45-4) in today's quarterfinals, which begin at 9:30 a.m.

Jason Strope suffered a 4-2 loss to Gallatin's Keegan Allen in the first round at 106, but he bounced back with a 4-1 win in the wrestlebacks. Strope (30-11) will face either Marceline's Cooper Fisher or Lawson's Garrett McCutchen in the second round of wrestlebacks today.

Michael Trotter led Versailles with a win by fall in the first round against Summit Christian's Trenton Holloway at 182. Trotter (45-5), ranked No. 4, faces top-ranked Noah Elmore (41-5) of Whitfield in today's quarterfinals.

Kooper Wilson lost by fall in his first-round match at 138, but the Versailles senior came back and pinned Lone Jack's Hunter Hoelscher in wrestlebacks. Wilson (42-10) will face either Marceline's Clayton Stallo or Sumner's Keith Clay in the second-round wrestlebacks.

Payton Lafoy went 0-2 Thursday at 120, losing by fall in the first round against Stanberry's Dylon Pappert and then dropped a 4-2 decision to Gallatin's Ayden Wayne in the wrestlebacks. Lafoy finishes the season with a 31-19 record.

After the first day, Versailles is tied for 26th place in the team standings with seven points, while Fatima is tied for 32nd with five points.

Whitfield leads the Class 1 standings with 38.5 points, followed by Lawson (32), Marceline (29) and Seneca (28) to round out the top four.
