Harrison reaches scoring milestone for Helias

The Hogan Prep Rams continued to roll Saturday night at the Central Bank Shootout.

The Rams, ranked No. 6 in Class 3, have yet to lose in 2018 and extended their win streak to nine games with a 77-54 win against the Helias Crusaders at Rackers Fieldhouse.

"They're really good," Helias coach Josh Buffington said. "They're really tough, they're very athletic, they have a lot of leadership."

The top highlight of the game for the Crusaders came at the 6:01 mark of the fourth quarter, when senior Landon Harrison drove the left side of the lane for a layup while drawing a foul.

The basket gave Harrison his 1,500th career point, making him just the second Helias player to reach that milestone. He trails only Jamaal Tatum on the Crusaders' all-time scoring list with 1,785 points.

"That's a very special accomplishment," Buffington said. "He's the second all-time leading scorer in Helias history and he's had a special career for us. He's a special kid and great things are happening for him."

Harrison made the free throw to complete the 3-point play, finishing the game with six points, but that only cut the Hogan Prep lead to 60-43.

Helias trailed the entire game and Hogan Prep ended the first quarter on a 10-0 run to lead 22-4.

The Crusaders held the Rams without a field goal for the final 5:43 of the first half, cutting the deficit to 29-17 at intermission.

Despite finishing with 22 points in the third quarter - which included a 4-of-7 mark from 3-point range - Helias fell further behind, trailing 56-39 entering the fourth quarter.

"We just gave up too many layups and too many offensive rebounds," Buffington said. "They scored in transition. The biggest keys that we were focused on defensively, we didn't execute them and they built confidence.

"When you get down that big to a team as talented and athletic as they are, it's going to be hard to come back from that."

Ben Cooper scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the third quarter for the Crusaders, knocking down three of his four 3-pointers in the quarter.

Marcus Anthony also reached double figures with 14 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds.

Damien Daniels was one of four players to score in double figures for Hogan Prep (16-3), finishing with 27 points on 11-of-18 shooting. Marty Jackson also added 17 points, while Kevaun Maull-Edwards and Miles Johnson had 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Helias (13-8) plays four Boone County schools to wrap up the regular season, starting next Friday with a game at Hickman.

In Saturday's JV game at Helias Gym, Helias defeated Hogan Prep 61-51 to improve to 12-2. Caleb Justice led the Crusaders with 16 points, while Damon Johanns finished with 14 points and Dylan Weaver added 13 points.
