Jays add Phillips to basketball staff

The Jefferson City Jays boys basketball team welcomed the addition of an assistant coach with plenty of postseason success Saturday.

Tony Phillips, who coached the Southern Boone girls basketball team to its first Final Four appearance in program history in 2016, has been named an assistant coach for the Jefferson City Jays.

"We're excited to have Tony join our staff and feel incredibly fortunate to add a coach of his caliber," Jays coach Mark Anderson said. "I've seen his teams play over the past several years, and there's no question that he's one of the best coaches and hardest workers in mid-Missouri."

In three seasons at Southern Boone, Phillips compiled a record of 61-26 with a pair of district titles and a quarterfinal appearance to go along with a fourth-place finish in Class 3 in 2016.

Phillips joins assistant Jordan Chapman on Anderson's staff. Phillips will also coach the JV squad.

"Tony shares very similar beliefs and philosophies with coach Chapman and me, and we believe that Tony will mesh well with our staff and our players," Anderson said. "We know he's going to be a tremendous asset and addition to our coaching staff, our program and our high school."

Phillips replaces assistant coach Mike Waldo, who decided to leave the program after being hired in May.
