COLUMBIA - The Maryville Spoofhounds rushed for 372 yards and started the Class 3 state championship game with 40 unanswered points to beat the Mount Vernon Mountaineers 47-9 on Saturday at Faurot Field.
Maryville (13-2) scored on its first five possessions and benefited from a roughing the kicker penalty on a punt attempt on the game's first possession.
Eli Dowis scored three of the Spoofhounds' first five touchdowns. His third was from 4 yards out and extended Maryville's lead to 33-0 with 6:59 left in the second quarter.
Tate Oglesby added a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown to make the score 40-0 at halftime.
Mount Vernon got on the scoreboard with a touchdown pass and a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter, but Maryville put the running clock back into effect with a 3-yard touchdown run by Jacob Reuter for a 38-point lead with 11:41 to play in the game.
Dowis finished with 11 carries for 135 yards and Tyler Houchin added 17 rushes for 126 yards and a touchdown for Maryville.
Reuter had 87 yards rushing and two scores.
Mount Vernon (10-5) had 168 total yards of offense. Ty Boswell completed 17-of-28 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown, a 5-yard pass to Will Boswell.
Blair Oaks opens the 2018 season against Maryville, which won its third state title in the past six years.
