Russellville, Linn and St. Elizabeth in sectional baseball action today

Three area teams will be in action today as the MSHSAA baseball playoffs begin sectional action.

The Russellville Indians (14-9) will host the Linn Wildcats (9-11) in a Class 2 sectional at 5:30 p.m.

Russellville showed why it was the No. 1 seed in the District 7 Tournament at Harrisburg. It defeated Calvary Lutheran 12-2 in the semifinals before besting Harrisburg 19-10 in the title game.

Linn took a bit of a different route in winning the District 8 Tournament at Vienna.

The Wildcats were the No. 5 seed in the six-team tournament. Linn opened with a 5-2 win against Belle, then defeated top-seeded Eugene 6-0 in the semifinals. In the title game, Linn downed second-seeded Vienna 5-1.

Russellville defeated Linn 6-5 on April 10. That game was at Linn.

The Russellville-Linn winner will advance to Wednesday's quarterfinal against either Canton (17-4) or Sturgeon (14-2).

At 6 p.m., the St. Elizabeth Hornets (12-6) will play host to Santa Fe (10-10) in a Class 1 sectional.

St. Elizabeth advanced by winning the District 9 Tournament at Hermitage. The Hornets blanked the host school 8-0 in the semifinals before posting a 4-2 victory against Wheatland in the title game.

St. Elizabeth dropped a 5-4 decision to New Franklin in the sectionals last year.

Santa Fe won the District 10 title as the No. 2 seed, opening with a 20-1 win against Kingsville before topping Northwest: Hughesville 5-3 for the title.

The St. Elizabeth-Santa Fe winner will take on either Pilot Grove (10-5) or Wellsville (8-11) in the quarterfinals Wednesday. If St. Elizabeth wins, it would host Pilot Grove or play at Wellsville.
