Kyle Backes and the Blair Oaks Falcons have qualified for the Class 2 state golf championships at Freemont Hills Golf Club in Nixa.

Led by standouts such as state champions Kory Franks and Tanner Elder, the Blair Oaks Falcons have made their mark on the golf scene in recent seasons.

But the Falcons have done just fine this season without those big names, qualifying as a team for the Class 2 state tournament that starts today at Freemont Hills Country Club in Nixa.

"People are wondering where this came from," Blair Oaks coach Leroy Bernskoetter said. "There's not a Tanner, there's not a Kory on this team. Obviously those guys can shoot some low scores.

"I think in the past, we may have thought we could ride Tanner or Kory and not necessarily shoot as low a score as we could have. But these guys, one through five, are a team."

The Falcons have already posted a pair of first-place team finishes this postseason. Blair Oaks won the District 4 title in a tiebreaker against Lamar, then captured the sectional title by 12 shots last week.

"I just hope everything keeps falling into place for us," Bernskoetter said. "It's become a good run and a fun year for us."

The sectional title came in a true team effort as Jake Van Ronzelen, Kyle Backes and Jared Steinbeck all tied for third, while Braydon Pemberton tied for 10th.

Van Ronzelen, Backes and Steinbeck all shot 82s in the sectional after claiming top 10 spots at district.

"If we can do that at state, I'd like to see where we land," Bernskoetter said. "The good thing is, I think we still have a little room for improvement."

Van Ronzelen and Backes will be making their third appearances in the state tournament. Van Ronzelen was 34th as a sophomore and tied for 58th as a freshman, while Backes was 29th last year and 67th in 2015.

"This will be nothing new for them," Bernskoetter said. "Jake's very competitive, I think he'll do OK. And with Kyle's experience at state, he should do fine as well."

Steinbeck has matured as a player during the season.

"He has confidence and he knows how to handle adversity better than he did before," Bernskoetter said.

Braydon Pemberton also has state experience, having advanced in 2016 when the Falcons finished second in Class 2.

Denny Harris, Blair Oaks' fifth player, has had an impact in the postseason. It was his score that was used the tiebreaker in the Falcons' district title victory.

"If we can keep everybody in the 80s, we're going to be right there," Bernskoetter said. "We don't need to have our best days down there, but we don't want to have our worst ones.

"If we play as good as we can, we should be pretty happy after two days."

The Falcons will have to keep the ball in the fairways at Freemont Hills.

"It's an old-style golf course, surrounded by houses," Bernskoetter said. "It's tight with a lot of trees, you have to hit the ball straight. If you spray it, you can go out of bounds pretty easily. But we hit the ball long enough, we don't really need to hit the driver that much.

"This is going to be a tough course, but everybody has to play it, so we are going to go down there with the idea of being successful."

Bishop LeBlond returns to defend its team title. Hermann, which finished third last year, figures to be in the mix for team honors along with Palmyra.

The top 15 individuals earn all-state honors, while the top four teams receive trophies.
