SEDALIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Jays and Lady Jays captured team honors Saturday in the Class 5 District 5 Track and Field Championships.
The Lady Jays won seven events on their way to 178.5 team points. The Jays won four events in totaling 179 team points to top the eight-team field.
On the girls side, Kayelee Payton was a double-winner for Jefferson City. The junior took first in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Other individual winners for the Lady Jays were Simone Anderson in the 200-meter dash, Jessica Rhoads in the shot put and Carlee Brehe in the discus.
The Lady Jays also were first in the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays.
On the boys side, the Jays won two track and two field events.
Brendan Bena was first in the 800-meter run, while Jackson Schwartz won the 3,200-meter run. Devin Roberson was first in the discus, while Corey Suttle won the shot put.
The top four finishers in each event advance to next Saturday's sectional meet. The Jays advanced in 18 of the 19 events, while the Lady Jays moved on in 15 events.
The top four sectional finishers then advance to the state championships, scheduled for May 26-27 at Adkins Stadium.
