Jays roll past Borgia, edge Fatima in baseball

WASHINGTON, Mo. - The Jefferson City Jays collected 19 hits and Jacob Weirich struck out nine in just four innings Saturday as they began the season 2-0 with wins against Borgia and Fatima.

The Jays made quick work of the Borgia Knights, scoring in each of the first four innings to win 10-0 in five innings.

Jefferson City had a back-and-forth battle with the Comets before a two-run sixth inning gave the Jays a 7-6 win.

Jonathon Backes and Drew Bax each had a two-run home run in the game for Fatima.

Grant Wood and Payton Bodenstab each had two hits for the Jays.

Weirich had four RBI, Tyler Bise recorded two RBI and Kade Franks drove in a run.

Wood was the winning pitcher, throwing two perfect innings of relief.

Against Borgia, Weirich threw four perfect innings with nine strikeouts. Joseph Travis pitched the fifth, only allowing one hit.

Franks went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run. Hayden Hirschvogel had two hits and three RBI, while Wood finished with two hits and two RBI.

Jefferson City (2-0) will start a four-day tournament in Union City, Tenn. on Wednesday.

Fatima got a 3-2 win against Borgia.

Logan Bexten threw a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.

Backes and Bax each had two hits.

Fatima (1-1) plays at Hallsville on Monday and hosts Helias on Tuesday.
