Post 5 Juniors drop pair

SEDALIA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Post 5 Juniors dropped a doubleheader Sunday, losing 8-4 in game one and 6-4 in game two against Sedalia Post 642.

The Post 5 Juniors trailed 5-0 through three innings in game one, then answered with a three-run frame in the top of the fourth. Jefferson City added another run in the fifth to make the score 6-4.

Sedalia picked up two insurance runs in the sixth to make it a four-run game.

Wyatt Luebbert, Braden Hickey and Drew Voss each had one hit for Post 5. Jackson Voss struck out three batters in three innings on the mound.

Sedalia jumped out to a 4-0 through 1 innings in game two, but Jefferson City tied the game at 4 with a run in the bottom of the second and three more runs in the third.

Post 642 retook the lead with a two-run fourth inning and then shut out Post 5 in the next four innings to sweep the doubleheader.

Gage Bax had a pair of hits for Jefferson City and Drew Voss added two RBI. Drew Voss also pitched three innings and struck out four, while Gavin Bernskoetter also fanned four in 2 innings.

The Post 5 Juniors (20-8) will play St. Charles Post 312 in the first round of the Zone 1 Tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in New Haven. The top-two teams in the four-team tournament - which also includes Moberly/Kirksville Post 6 and New Haven Post 366 - will advance to next week's state tournament in Independence.

Note: The Jefferson City Post 5 Seniors will host the District 8 Tournament in a best 2-of-3 series against Columbia Post 202 at the American Legion Post 5 Sports Complex. The first game is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday and game two will be at 6 p.m. Friday. If a third game is needed, it will be at 9 p.m. Friday.
