Phenom Black finishes fifth at Showdown

FULTON, Mo. - The Central Missouri Phenom Black baseball team finished 3-2 for fifth place during the weekend at the Fulton Summer Showdown, held at Fulton High School and William Woods University.

The Phenom started with a 6-3 win Friday against Columbia Post 202. Graysan Peneston earned the win on the mound, striking out six batters in five innings of work. Tyler Cassmeyer pitched the final two innings and added two strikeouts.

In the second game Friday, the Phenom lost 3-0 to the KC Bullets. Central Missouri was held to four hits, two coming from Garrett Welschmeyer. Andrew Rodriguez took the loss, striking out five batters in four innings of work.

The Phenom also split two games Saturday, opening the day with a 5-0 win against the Charleston Fighting Squirrels. Mason Hunter pitched a no-hitter and struck out 10 while walking three. He also collected two hits.

Peneston had two hits and Mason Gipe had one RBI.

In Saturday's second game, the St. Louis Bandits topped the Phenom 8-5, rallying with a five-run sixth inning. Nick Easley had three hits and three RBI and Welschmeyer finished with two hits and one RBI. Cade Galbraith struck out two in 4 innings pitching.

In the Phenom's final game of the Showdown on Sunday, Central Missouri routed Battle 13-1 in five innings. Easley had two hits and three RBI, Peneston collected two hits and two RBI and Welschmeyer drove in three runs.

Cassmeyer was the winning pitcher, striking out seven batters in three innings.

The Phenom Black (20-6) will play in a tournament starting Friday at Kansas City, Kan.

Central Missouri also had its two 17U teams participate in the tournament. The Phenom White went 4-0 to take first place, while the Phenom Blue went 3-1 to take third place.

In their head-to-head matchup, the Phenom White won 8-2 against the Phenom Blue. Chad Volmert had four RBI to lead the Phenom White and Jacob Crede drove in two runs.

The Phenom White also won 9-1 against Battle and 10-6 against Dodge City, Kan., on Friday, then beat the Kansas City Bullets 7-5 on Sunday.

Connor McKenna struck out six in four innings against Battle and Volmert had three RBI.

Payton Bodenstab collected four hits against Dodge City and Volmert drove in three runs against the Bullets.

The Phenom Blue beat Battle 4-2, topped Dodge City 8-0 in five innings and routed the St. Louis Bandits 12-1.

Austin Flippin struck out six batters in four innings against Battle and Austin Loucks had a team-high three hits. Brandon Ferguson pitched a one-hitter with six strikeouts against Dodge City, while Tyklen Salmons had two hits and four RBI. Garrett Wolfe struck out six in five innings to beat the Bandits and Hayden Green added three hits and two RBI.

The Phenom White (20-6-3) and the Phenom Blue (15-13) will also play this weekend in Kansas City, Kan.
