Ash named National Coach of the Year

Wednesday was a big day for Jefferson City Jays baseball head coach Brian Ash.

First he was named Missouri's Coach of the Year by the USA Today after guiding the Jays to the Class 5 state championship and a 31-2 record. Then more awards kept coming.

The American Baseball Coaches Association and Diamond Sports recognized Ash as the High School Division I Region 5 Coach of the Year. There was still one more award on the way.

The ABCA and Diamond Sports also named Ash as the High School Division I National Coach of the Year.

Each of the three high school divisions were broken into eight regions in the voting process. The National Coach of the Year honor then went to one of the eight regional coaches of the year.

The High School Division II National Coach of the Year honor went to Joel Sage of Roosevelt, S.D., while Trent Mongero of North Hall, Ga., took the Division III award.

The ABCA and Diamond Sports also select coach of the year awards at eight different collegiate levels.

Ash and the other regional and national coaches of the year will be honored at the ABCA/Diamond Hall of Fame/Coach of the Year Banquet on Jan. 5 in Indianapolis during the 74th annual ABCA Convention.

Another member of the Jays baseball coaching staff also received a national honor.

J.R. Simmons was named the Regional Assistant Coach of the Year by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Simmons was honored by Region 5, which consists of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and North Dakota.
