Post 5 Seniors open tournament with win

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. - The Jefferson City American Legion Post 5 Seniors opened the Fike Wood Bat Tournament on Wednesday with a 5-1 win against Union Bank of Omaha, Neb.

The Post 5 Seniors took the lead in the bottom of the second inning with a four-run frame. Brandon Williams had an RBI single and Zach Stiles added a two-run single later in the inning.

Jefferson City scored its last run in the fifth on an RBI double by Kade Franks.

Williams went 3-for-3 at the plate with three singles. Franks had a two-hit game, adding a single, while Johnathon Backes finished with a pair of singles.

Skyler Dickneite picked up the win for Post 5, throwing five shutout innings. He scattered six hits and walked one while striking out four. Franks pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits while adding one strikeout.

The Post 5 Seniors (16-6) will continue pool play with two games today, facing Post 226 at 10 a.m. followed by Odessa at 3 p.m.

Post 5 wrapped up the Firecracker Tournament in Fairview Heights, Ill., earlier this week. Jefferson City finished pool play in the tournament Sunday with a 3-1 win against Morgantown, W.V.

Jason Rackers pitched five-plus no-hit innings to get the win, allowing only two runners to reach base: a one-out walk in the first inning and a leadoff walk in the sixth, which led to Morgantown's only run.

Hayden Hirschvogel closed the game, allowing three hits to go with one walk and one strikeout in two innings of work.

Jefferson City scored two runs in the bottom of the first and added an insurance run in the fifth. Franks went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while Hirschvogel had two singles.

Post 5 finished 3-1 in pool play, advancing to Monday's four-team bracket. Jefferson City lost 3-1 to Jackson in the semifinals to wrap up tournament play.

Post 5 tied the game at 1 in the top of the third with an RBI single by Franks, scoring Rackers. Jackson took the lead with a run in the fifth and added another run in the sixth to build a two-run lead.

Logan Bexten took the loss for Post 5, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts in 5 innings.

Hirschvogel and Gaven Strobel each had a double in the loss.
