Jays wrestlers win crown at Hickman

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Garrett Butel and Davonta Finney captured titles Saturday as Jefferson City took team honors at the Hickman Wrestling Tournament.

Butel finished the two-day tournament with a record of 5-0 with four wins by fall to take honors at 106 pounds. Finney went 5-0 with five pins to win the title at 285. Only one of his matches went to the third period.

The Jays finished with 271 team points to take the title. Northwest was second with 238.5, while Grain Valley was a distant third with 155.

"Our kids wrestled some outstanding matches," Jays coach Phil Cagle said.

Six other Jays finished second in their respective weight classes:

Charlie Kusick, 4-1 with three pins at 126.

Sam Rackers, 5-1 with two pins at 132.

Peter Kuster, 5-1 with four pins at 138.

Christian Mayberry, 5-1 with a win by fall and another by technical fall at 145.

Dennis Barnes, 5-1 with four wins by fall at 160.

Tyler Bise, 4-1 with three wins by fall at 170.

"The finals were kind of like us dualing against an all-star team," Cagle said. "The kids in the finals were all facing some very tough opponents."

Will Kuster took third at 120, finishing 4-1 with three pins.

Sam Martin at 113, Reece Neighbors at 152 and Brandon Backues at 220 were all fifth for Jefferson City. Ian Cote was sixth at 182, while Thomas McCarthy was 10th at 195.

Jefferson City is back in action Tuesday with a dual against Hickman in Columbia.
