Eleven Jays undefeated after first day in district wrestling

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. - With 11 wrestlers advancing to the semifinals, the Jefferson City Jays top the team standings after the opening day of the Class 4 District 3 Tournament.

Garrett Butel at 106 pounds, Will Kuster at 120, Charlie Kusick at 126, Sam Rackers at 132, Peter Kuster at 138, Christian Mayberry at 145, Reece Neighbors at 152, Dennis Barnes at 160, Tyler Bise at 170, Brandon Backues at 220 and Davonta Finney at 285 all finished undefeated Friday.

Kusick, Rackers, Peter Kuster, Christian Mayberry, Barnes and Backues were all 2-0. Butel, Will Kuster, Neighbors, Bise and Finney were all 1-0 with a bye.

With a win in the semifinals, the 11 would qualify for next week's state tournament at Mizzou Arena.

Three Jays - Sam Martin at 113, Ian Cote at 182 and Thomas McCarthy at 195 - remain alive in the wrestlebacks as Jefferson City lost just three matches Friday.

Jefferson City has 70.5 points to top the 15-team field. Waynesville at 53, Lebanon at 44.5, Lee's Summit North at 40 and Lee's Summit West at 36 round out the top five.

The tournament concludes today.
