For a quarter and a half, the winless Hickman Kewpies were giving the Jefferson City Jays all they could handle Friday night at Adkins Stadium.

On Hickman's second drive of the game, the Kewpies used 13 plays to cover 42 yards and kick a 28-yard field goal to get within 7-6 with 7:16 left in the first half.

Then the string of four straight punts and an interception came as the Jays found the end zone on five straight drives to beat Hickman for the fifth straight time, 48-13.

"They are starting to get more confidence," Jays coach Ted LePage said of Hickman. "I think they are on the right track. They had us on our heels a little bit. I'm real proud our players, played through it. There was a lot of adversity in the first half. There were flags all over the place."

The Jays had three touchdowns called back for penalties in the first half.

Adam Huff returned a kickoff 98 yards following Hickman's first drive, but holding brought it back.

Gunnar See had two touchdown passes negated for an ineligible player downfield.

The Kewpies' lone touchdown came with 11 second left in the game when Andrew Paten connected with Talin Kemp for a 22-yard touchdown.

The Kewpies combined to go 114 yards in 31 plays on their first two drives, but they ended with field goals of 24 and 28 yards.

An incomplete pass on 3rd-and-goal set up the 24-yard field goal. A pass interference on 4th-and-20 allowed Hickman to kick the 28-yard field goal.

Rashaun Woods extended the lead to 14-6 by breaking tackles on a 30-yard run with 5:35 left in the first half.

Woods got into the end zone first Friday night, scoring on a 19-yard catch and run from See only 1:53 into the game.

See threw four touchdowns on the night, including a 19-yard pass to Dennis Barnes, who used a stiff arm at the 12-yard line to get into the end zone.

See also found Huff for a 34-yard score early in the third quarter and Allan Roettgen for a 22-yard touchdown late in the third period.

Backup quarterback Devin Roberson also threw a touchdown, finding a wide open Levi Jobe in the end zone for a 24-yard connection in the fourth quarter.

"I'm really pleased with our offensive effort tonight," LePage said. "I thought we ran the ball extremely well, I thought we threw it extremely well."

Barnes returned a punt 69 yards to the house to make it 28-6 with 55 second left in the first half.

Jefferson City (3-0) will have its first road test of the season next week when it travels to Springdale, Ark. to play the Har-Ber Wildcats.

The Wildcats are coming off a runner-up in Class 7A, the largest class in Arkansas.

Har-Ber is ranked No. 2 and is 1-0 after beating Fort Smith Southside 47-0 on Friday night.

This will be the first meeting between the Jays and Wildcats.
