Helias' Anna Vollet prepares for the start of the Class 4 girls 200-meter dash Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Adkins Staidum in Jefferson City.

No one was as surprised to be on the podium as Anna Vollet.

The Helias sophomore was running in the first heat - known as the "slow heat" - in the adjusted timed-finals of the girls 200-meter dash Saturday at the Class 4 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City. The top eight seeds run in the second heat and the bottom eight seeds are in the first heat.

Vollet won the first heat of the finals with a time of 25.79 seconds, but there were still eight competitors left to run. She finished better than four runners in the "fast heat" and made it to the podium, placing fifth overall.

"I did not expect at all to make it in the top eight," Vollet said. "I thought they would beat me by a lot."

The 200-meter dash preliminaries were postponed from Friday due to inclement weather. In order to stay on schedule, rather than running preliminaries and then finals, the 200 became a finals-only event on Saturday.

Vollet ran the 100-meters Friday, but she would have to wait until Saturday to finish her second event at state.

"I was expecting to have it all over with (Friday)," Vollet said. "I didn't even think I was going to make it in the top eight."

Vollet had a change of expectations after the race. Now she has no reason to be surprised if she is on the podium the next two years.

Helias finished in a tie for 32nd place in the Class 4 girls team standings with eight points. Vollet was the only state competitor for the Lady Crusaders on Saturday.

Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School won the Class 4 girls team championship with 74 points. Ste. Genevieve took second with 56 points and Raytown South was third with 56 points. Parkway Central placed fourth with 31 points.

This year was the first time javelin was scheduled as an event at state track, as an exhibition.

Helias senior Weston Porter said he had competed in the javelin five or six times during the regular season. While he participated in other sanctioned track and field events, he spent the past week training for the javelin.

The extra practice paid off. Porter, seeded ninth, finished in second place in the exhibition event. His longest throw traveled 171 feet, 8 inches, breaking his personal record by more than 18 feet.

"When I threw it, I thought it might be in the 160s," Porter said of his first throw in the javelin. "But then they said 171 and I was pretty excited, because I knew that had a chance to get me pretty high on the podium."

Tyson Roderique of Webb City won the inaugural Class 4 competition with a throw of 174-8.

This will be the only time Porter competes in the javelin at state, but he said he hopes it will become an official event.

"That was really cool to be a part of the starting off of a cool event," Porter said. "I think it's an awesome event. It's cool to watch and it's not something you see every day, a bunch of guys throwing spears around a field."

Unfortunately, Porter's performance did not count as points for the Crusaders, who tied for 36th place with five points. Grandview won the Class 4 boys team championship with 60 points. Raytown South took second with 53 points, West Plains was third with 38 points and Carl Junction and Kearney tied for fourth with 31 points.
