Fatima sophomore Brianna Haller runs in the Class 3 girls 3,200-meter run Saturday, May 28, 2016, at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

After winning the state title in the Class 3 girls 3,200-meter run last year as a freshman, Fatima's Brianna Haller seemed primed for a repeat performance Saturday at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

However, unforeseen circumstances limited her training this year, resulting in a runner-up finish in 11:45.81, more than 25 seconds slower than last year's winning time.

"I know it's not what I did last year, but this year has been harder," Haller said. "I found out that I have low iron like a week before districts, two weeks before districts, so I've been running with that all season."

Snow-topped tulips hold up against Friday’s unusual May weather outside the football stadium on the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville campus.

Her times suffered, only clocking in at 11:45.36 at districts and 11:43.92 at sectionals.

"Usually I was running five miles a day, but switched it to where I was running two and a half to three, and at a way slower pace that I want to," Haller said. "You get frustrated with it sometimes, but other times it is what it is. I know I'll eventually get back up there."

Haller took the lead midway through the second lap Saturday, battling Alex Curtin of Whitfield for the next four laps before settling a ways back in second place. She still finished ahead of third place by about four seconds.

"I kind of slowed down a little bit because I could feel my legs feel more tired, so I wanted to save some for the last lap," Haller said. "I know that I did my best out there on the track."

Fatima's girls 4x800-meter relay team of Haller, Halie Moeller, Alyssa Struemph and Katelyn Vanderfeltz slowly moved up from fifth early in the race to take third in 10:05.72.

Gavin Ownbey of Fatima was all-state in the high jump, taking seventh with at 6-foot, 4 inches.

Fellow Comet Alex Krieg placed seventh in the 800-meter run in 1:59.15. He worked his way up to fourth by the final turn, but lost some ground on the final stretch.

In the girls shot put, defending champion Audrey Pickering of California found herself in familiar territory after Friday's preliminaries. She was atop the leaderboard with a throw of 43-4 before the weather postponed the finals until Saturday morning.

"Yesterday I was really nervous," Pickering said. "Today it wasn't so bad because I had the 43. I was sitting in first and I knew that could change, but I was happy with where I was."

Pickering waited in anticipation to hear her distance following her fifth of six throws. The official yelled out 44-2.25, followed by Pickering's big sigh of relief and a smile.

That toss earned her a state title for the second straight year.

"I think I went weak at the knees because I kind of fell a little bit walking out the back," Pickering said. "My friend, Michelle, she laughed at me. She came up and was like, 'You looked like you tripped there, what happened?'"

What happened was a personal record, which Pickering said she hopes to crush next year.

"I was aiming for 45, actually I was just hoping to PR this year," she said. "I'm really happy I got a 44. It wasn't exactly what I set my goal for at the beginning of the year, but it's pretty good. I'm happy with it. I set my goal a little bit high. I set it for 50. That goal is going to carry over for next year."

A 50-foot throw would surpass the class record by three feet, and miss the all-class record by just one foot, one inch.

In the girls discus, Cameron Meyer of California broke her own school record with a throw of 128-1, earning her third place.

She said her goal was 120 feet, but sent her first throw 128-1.

"As soon as I let go of it I was like, 'Wow, that's going to be really far,'" Meyer said. "I was so excited and happy because I've been working all year."

Emma Kelly of Southern Boone ended up fourth with a throw of 125-10.

Saturday couldn't have gone much better for Eldon hurdler Levi Shinn.

In the morning, he raced his way to a runner-up finish in the 110-meter hurdles (14.92). In the afternoon, the fourth-seeded Shinn took the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles (38.75).

"I was a little surprised," Shinn said about his 300-meter hurdle win. "I prepared all week for this. I had Reeds Spring and Lamar coming behind me and I knew the Reed Springs kid finishes really strong, so I knew how to close in really fast there at the end. It was really clean. I had all my lead legs and it felt great. It was smooth."

Last year, Shinn failed to make it past districts.

"It's crazy," he said. "Last year I got taken out at districts. A hurdle went into my lane, I flipped, so I didn't get to go to state. I've been waiting for this day to come back and I've been ready for it."

Fellow Mustang Zachary Schaeffer finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.16).

Auston Phillips' throw of 44-6.25 in the shot put placed him fifth.

Hannah Crow of Southern Boone was a state title winner in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.71 seconds.

She followed that up with a third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in 44.65 seconds.

Aaron Verduin of Southern Boone was fifth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.34).

Tessa Edgar of Versailles finished sixth in the high jump, clearing 5-1. Jordan Bartlett of School of the Osage finished in a three-way tie for eighth, clearing 4-11.

Jason Edwards of Osage finished second in the exhibition javelin with a throw of 148-9.

John Burroughs comfortably won the boys title with 73 points. Lamar was second at 58.

Reeds Spring (42) and Liberty: Mountain View (34) finished third and fourth, respectively.

McCluer South-Berkley won the girls team title with 69 points, beating out John Burroughs (62.5).

Lincoln College Prep (51) took third while St. James (34) was fourth.
