Linn's Harley Nale (left) leads Cole Camp's Tayler Gudde (686) and the rest of the field into the first turn in the Class 2 girls 4x800-meter relay final Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

It was almost blinding Saturday at the Class 2 state track and field championships at Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City.

Not because of the bright sunshine, but the brightly-colored shades Russellville distance runners Anthony Bertucci and Harrison Frank wear while competing and accepting their medals.

"It's our new tradition," Frank said following his runner-up finish in the 800-meter run.

Well, the tradition may be here to stay, as both walked away with top-four medals Saturday.

Bertucci, as he did in Friday's 3,200-meter run, closed in on his competitors on the final lap.

He was ninth as he reached the front stretch of the third lap, but closed in fast to finish fourth in 4:38.58. His 1:07.413 in the final 400 meters of the race was the fastest among the field of 16.

"He did really good today," Frank said of Bertucci. "He said he was just going to put it all out on the 1,600 and see what he had left in the 800."

In the 800, Bertucci wasn't able to make a push to the medal stand and finished 10th. But Frank made a pass for third coming off the final turn and made it to second on the final stretch, finishing in a time of 1:59.18, breaking the school record of 2:00.50.

"I always have a kick," Frank said. " I just set my mark on them and go all out on it."

His seed time of 2:05.55 was seventh best.

"I did a lot better than I was expecting," he said.

Frank said he's fortunate to have Bertucci as a teammate.

"We practice together all the time, just pushing each other and just going faster and faster," he said. "It benefits us a lot. I'm so grateful to have him on my team. It just makes both of us better athletes."

On the girls' side for Russellville, Jordan Barnhart placed second in the high jump.

She failed to clear 5-4 on her first two attempts, but made it over on the third and final attempt.

Freshman hurdler Mackenzie Schwartz finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.66 seconds.

"I had no idea I was going to get this far," Schwartz said.

Schwartz was battling for the lead in the final turn, but lost spots on the front stretch and hit the final hurdle.

"Just hoping that I get better and make bigger goals and reach those goals," she said about next season.

Adrian Mann of South Callaway broke the school record of 48.94 seconds in the event, taking second in 47.55 seconds.

Harley Nale of Linn broke her own school record in Friday's 800-meter run and followed it up with an eight-place finish in the 400-meter run Saturday in 1:02.04.

"I wasn't expecting to get out of prelims, so to be able to make it past that I'm pretty proud of it," Nale said.

Nale, along with teammates Audrey Froning, Lily Klouzek and Lindsey Lebel, took seventh in the 4x800-meter relay in 10:16.52, topping their own school record of 10:32.53.

"I'm super proud of the girls," Nale said. "We worked all season for it."

In the girls shot put, Jasmine Evers of Eugene placed eighth with a throw of 35-5.25, which she accomplished on her fourth toss. Her previous best this season was 33-8.

Samantha Haas of New Bloomfield broke a school record in the triple jump with a leap of 33-10.50, surpassing the previous mark of 33-4. She finished seventh.

Father Tolton (55) edged out Summit Christian Academy (51) for the girls team title. Lathrop took third at 37 while Ash Grove was fourth at 33. Plattsburg rounds out the top five with 32 points.

Skyline was the boys team champion with 65 points. Cleveland NJROTC was runner-up at 53.

Bourbon (37) Sarcoxie (33) took third and fourth, respectively. Monroe City and College Heights Christian tied for fifth at 31.
