Father Tolton wins fifth-place game in overtime

The Father Tolton Trailblazers never led in the fourth quarter, but a tie score was all they needed.

Father Tolton overcame a 5-point deficit with 1:18 to play to force overtime, then rallied again to extend the contest to a second overtime. The Trailblazers finally grabbed the lead and never let it go, winning 83-80 in double overtime against the Raytown South Cardinals in the fifth-place game Friday of the Great 8 Classic at Fleming Fieldhouse.

The Trailblazers completed their last-minute comeback in regulation when Isaiah Wilson - who led Father Tolton with 25 points - stepped back and drained a 24-foot shot with :07 remaining. His 3-pointer tied the game 67, forcing overtime.

In the first overtime period, Father Tolton trailed 73-69 with 1:53 to play after Sevon Witt scored Raytown South's first six points. Beau Washer scored a basket for the Trailblazers on the next possession, then drove the lane for an easy layup with 22 seconds to play to tie the game at 73.

The Cardinals were whistled for traveling with :05.6 left, but Washer's floater in the lane was off the mark at the buzzer, pushing the game to a second overtime.

Jonny Berndt gave the Trailblazers the lead for good with a 3-pointer in the opening minute of the second overtime session. Witt scored Raytown South's first six points again to close the gap to one point, but Wilson scored a basket in the lane with 1:05 to play to give Tolton an 82-79 lead.

Tyree Sorrells made a free throw for the Cardinals and then missed a 3-pointer that would have given his team the lead. Washer made 1-of-2 free throws with :04.7 left, extending the lead to three points, and Raytown South's Alex Herndon missed a long 3 at the buzzer that would have extended the game to a third overtime.

Neither team led by more than seven points in the game, which featured 13 lead changes and eight ties. Father Tolton led 19-13 after one quarter but trailed 35-33 at halftime. The two teams were tied at 48 as the third quarter ended.

Washer finished with 22 points and a team-high nine rebounds for Father Tolton, while Lael Haile added 13 points.

Witt scored a game-high 35 points on 15-of-18 shooting for Raytown South, which also committed 26 turnovers to just 11 for Father Tolton. Jamal Madge scored 20 points before fouling out three seconds into the first overtime.

After the game, Washer, Wilson and Witt were named to the all-tournament team.
