Jefferson City wrestling wins easily in home opener

It was a long trip for a short dual.

On Tuesday, the Fox Warriors made the roughly 140-mile trip from Arnold to take on the Jefferson City Jays in wrestling action at Fleming Fieldhouse.

The Jays made sure the Warriors got back to Arnold early, winning six matches by first-period fall on their way to a 60-16 victory in a dual that lasted a little more than 40 minutes despite having just two forfeits.

"It was just one of those nights," Jays coach Phil Cagle said.

The Jays got first-period pins from Will Kuster at 120 pounds (:39), Sam Rackers at 132 (:46), Peter Kuster at 138 (1:07), Reece Neighbors at 152 (1:50), Dennis Barnes at 160 (:54) and Tyler Bise at 170 (:23).

Charlie Kusick and Christian Mayberry dominated in their matches for the Jays.

At 126, Kusick posted a 14-3 major decision. He led 4-1 after one period before extending his advantage to 11-2 heading in the third.

At 145, Mayberry won by technical fall in 2:59. He led 13-0 after the first period before needing less than a minute to finish things off in the second.

The best match of the night was the last one.

At 285, Devonta Finney of the Jays led 1-0 after two periods before the match went to overtime tied at 1. There was no score in the first overtime period, which lasts one minute. Finney then held his opponent down in the first :30 extra period before getting an escape with :01 remaining in the second to get a 2-1 victory.

"That showed a lot of character on his part," Cagle said. "He kept wrestling the entire time, he didn't give up and that paid off with a victory."

Jefferson City is now 3-1 in regular-season duals.

"It was a good win for our kids," Cagle said. "We had a chance to show some the things we've been working on in the couple of days since the Missouri Duals.

"You're pleased, I don't know if happy is the right word. You're always looking for things you can do better. Now it's time to get back in the practice room to work on the things we saw tonight that we need to improve on."

Jefferson City is back in action Tuesday at Sedalia Smith-Cotton.

"We've got a week to get ready and that will give us a chance to teach a little more instead of just getting ready for a match," Cagle said.

Tuesday night's dual was one of just three at home for Jefferson City this season.
