When you're giving up five weight classes, that figures to reflect negatively when it comes to your dual record.

But when you look behind the records, the Helias Crusaders were happy with their performance Friday in the opening night of the Missouri Duals at Rackers Fieldhouse.

"If you don't go by wins and losses, the kids wrestled better," Helias coach Bryant Gaines said. "Don't get me wrong, we still have a lot to improve on.

"But we've been trying to get better on our movement on the mat and that was better tonight."

Helias finished 1-2 in its three duals Friday. The Crusaders opened with a 76-6 win against St. Charles Lutheran before falling 49-16 to Lebanon and 55-9 to Neosho.

"We wrestled tough against Lebanon and Neosho," Gaines said. "We're just not at the level we want to be at just jet."

The Crusaders were open from 170 pounds on up in those final two duals.

"We have a bunch of young kids there," Gaines said. "We don't want them getting hurt or frustrated because they aren't quite ready for the varsity level just yet.

"We want them to stick with it, continue to practice and improve. Their time will come on the varsity."

Helias had six wrestlers - Evan Winder at 113 pounds, Randy Salaz at 120, Zach Carr at 126, Dustin Luebbert at 138, Nick Gaines at 145 and Nick Schnieders at 152 - finish 2-1 on Friday night.

"We had some fight to us," Bryant Gaines said. "We did a good job of getting closer to scoring a few more points in matches and that's a positive."

And fixing that will come with experience. Helias had eight freshmen or sophomores in its starting lineup Friday.

"It's just mat time, we need to get more work in with these young kids," Gaines said.

That will continue today as Helias will wrap up action in its pool with duals against Rock Bridge, which is shorthanded, and Grain Valley.

"Grain Valley is a talented team, that will be a good test for us," Gaines said.

Action will resume at 9 a.m. today. The trophy round will follow the final two pool duals.
