For the second straight week the Jefferson City Jays had to endure a weather delay, but in this case it was only delaying the inevitable.

The Jays scored three touchdowns on their first four drives and forced five turnovers in a 38-0 win Friday night against McCluer North at Adkins Stadium.

A Mason York interception in the first quarter turned into a two-play, 43-yard touchdown drive early in the second quarter.

The final score of the game came with 4:04 left, when Corey Suttle dove on a fumble in the end zone.

Maleek Jackson added his fifth extra point to go with a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter.

"We had some big (turnovers) early and then we just kept piling on," Jays coach Ted LePage said. "The good thing is we didn't turn the ball over either."

Damarion Nelson-Winston didn't have many yards, but he didn't need them. The powerful back scored the first two touchdowns of the night, both from a yard out in the opening quarter.

Speedy receiver Dennis Barnes found the end zone next on a 34-yard connection from Gunnar See, who found Barnes behind two defenders for a wide open score on the second play of the second quarter. Barnes also leaped up for an interception along the sideline in the third quarter.

The Stars were about to punt on a fourth-and-16 with 5:08 left in the first half before lightning stopped the game and delayed it for about an hour. Last week's Jays scrimmage had several weather delays.

The Stars couldn't get much going offensively other than some scrambles by quarterback Rashad Wilkins, who was pressured by the Jays' front seven the entire game.

"Coming into the season we had some strengths that we were going to rely on on our defense, and one of them wasn't the D-line," LePage said. "As we've started to go through the preseason our defensive line has really stepped up."

Next week, the Jays will host Springfield Central, a team Jefferson City hasn't played since the mid-'60s.
