Lincoln University head football coach Steven Smith has resigned from his position, the school announced Wednesday.

In addition, Lincoln defensive coordinator Phil Pitts has stepped down. The former head football coach at Helias High School will return to the Crusaders' program this fall as defensive coordinator.

In his two years at Lincoln, Smith led the Blue Tigers to an overall record of 4-17, 2-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The school said Smith is leaving to pursue an opportunity in professional football.

Malik Hoskins, who served as Lincoln's offensive coordinator the past two seasons, has been elevated to the position of interim head coach for the 2019 season.

"I'd like to thank Coach Smith for his work building the Lincoln football program the past two years, and I wish him the best in his future endeavors," Lincoln director of athletics John Moseley said in a press release. "The team made some positive strides last season, and Coach Hoskins' familiarity with the program and our players should allow that development to continue this fall."

Lincoln will be returning to the MIAA in football this fall.
