DUBUQUE, Iowa - Maryville sophomore Gavin DeWitt took second place Saturday at the Flash Flanagan Open, hosted by Loras College.
DeWitt (Jefferson City High School) posted a 3-1 record in the 149-pound bracket, which featured 12 wrestlers. He opened with a win by fall in 3:33, then advanced to the semifinals with a 9-1 win by major decision.
To get to the championship match, DeWitt won by technical fall (18-0) against Tate Murty of Upper Iowa. However, during the championship match, DeWitt suffered an injury, which gave the title to Iowa's Zach Axmear by medical forfeit.
Through Saturday, DeWitt has a 5-6 record this season.
Maryville wrestles in a quad-dual Saturday at Kenosha, Wis.
