Lincoln men close strong in win against Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. — The Lincoln Blue Tigers closed with an 8-1 run Saturday to defeat the Emporia State Hornets 76-71 in MIAA men's basketball action.

The Hornets took a 69-68 lead on a basket by Julius Jackson with 2:14 remaining. A 3-pointer by Amariontez Ivory with 1:54 remaining gave Lincoln the lead for good at 71-69.

Terrance Smith hit a free throw with 1:01 left to push Lincoln's lead to three before Ivory connected on a pair form the line to make it 74-69 with :18 remaining.

Ivory hit two more free throws with :08 left to ice the victory.

Ivory finished with a game-high 30 points. He was 9-of-12 from the field, including an 8-of-11 performance on 3s, while hitting all four of his free-throw attempts.

Grant Olsson added 15 points for the Blue Tigers, while Smith finished with 10 points to go along with 12 rebounds.

Jackson paced Emporia State (8-12 overall, 3-8 MIAA) with 22 points.

Lincoln (15-5, 8-3), winners of three straight games, will host Missouri Western at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Emporia State rolled to a 92-62 win against Lincoln in the women's game.

The Blue Tigers scored first on a Bre Coleman jumper, but the Hornets were up 15-3 at the 5:37 mark of the opening quarter.

Emporia State led 23-11 at the end of the first quarter and 52-30 at halftime.

Emporia State led by as many as 33 (65-32) before Lincoln started to cut into the deficit a bit.

Alecia Gulledge made it 65-40 with a layup and Zoi Thompson made a 3-pointer to make the score 65-43.

Coleman, who finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds, closed the third-quarter scoring with a jumper to make it 69-49.

Gulledge added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Thompson scored 13 points and tallied five assists.

Kiara Shoulders led Lincoln with 12 rebounds.

Lincoln (9-11, 1-9 MIAA) will host Missouri Western at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Jason Gym.
