College Baseball: Wood named OVC's top freshman

OXFORD, Ala. - Murray State's Grant Wood was announced as the Ohio Valley Conference freshman of the year, the league announced Tuesday.

Wood (Jefferson City High School) is the second straight Murray State player to received the OVC's award for the top freshman player.

During the regular season, Wood led the Racers with a .375 batting average (66-for-176), starting in 49 of the team's 53 games. He scored 43 runs and collected 40 RBI while hitting 16 doubles and four home runs.

Wood was also selected to the OVC's All-Freshman team.

In Tuesday's first-round game of the OVC Tournament, Wood hit his fifth home run of the season and went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI in the Racers' 15-5 win against Eastern Illinois.

Murray State (27-27), the No. 7 seed, will face second-seeded Southeast Missouri at 4 p.m. today.
