Renegades, Griffons split high-scoring doubleheader

NEVADA, Mo. - The Jefferson City Renegades completed Saturday's suspended contest by scoring a lot of runs when play resumed Sunday.

The Nevada Griffons returned the favor on offense in Sunday's nightcap.

Jefferson City pulled away to a 12-1 run-rule win in seven innings in the first contest, while Nevada won 21-10 in eight innings of the second game for a doubleheader split in MINK League play.

Game 1 resumed in the top of the fifth inning, with Jefferson City leading 7-1.

The Renegades scored three runs in the sixth inning, getting RBI singles from Kaden Helsel and Jordan Smith while adding another run on an error to build a 10-1 lead.

Jefferson City ended the game early with two more runs in the seventh, as Justin McIntyre and Quincy Jones each scored on groundouts to seal the run-rule win.

The Renegades finished with just eight hits, but they took advantage of eight walks and five Nevada errors. Jones went 2-for-5 with a single and a double, while Helsel had a pair of singles. Tyler Bracht had a game-high three RBI.

Michael McElmeel picked up the win, striking out seven in four innings Saturday. When play resumed Sunday, Alex Loosbrook struck out two in two innings of relief and Ty Jones fanned a pair of batters in the seventh.

Game 2 consisted of multiple innings with crooked numbers.

Nevada started the high-scoring affair with five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 5-2 lead. Jefferson City answered with five runs in the top of the third to retake the lead 8-5.

The Griffons took the lead for good with a six-run fourth inning, then plated five more runs in the sixth to extend their advantage to 18-9. Connor Dupuy hit a walk-off, three-run home run to right field to end the game by run-rule in the bottom of the eighth.

Austin Blazevic hit a two-run home run in the top of the first to put the Renegades ahead early. He finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.

McIntyre had three hits - including a pair of doubles - and also tallied three RBI for the Renegades. Logan Hudson and Smith each added two singles.

The Griffons hit three home runs in the game. Domonique Hernandez hit a three-run blast in the first inning and Blake Faecher hit a solo shot in the third.

Tristan Steffens took the loss for the Renegades. In 3 innings, he allowed 12 runs - all earned - on eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts.

Jefferson City (21-18, 17-18 MINK) is off today and will finish the three-game series Tuesday at Nevada. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
