Edwards wins men's javelin at Missouri's home meet

COLUMBIA - Missouri freshman Jason Edwards earned his first collegiate event win Friday at the Tigers' home meet, the Tom Botts Invitational, at Walton Stadium.

Edwards (School of the Osage High School) was in second place for much of the men's javelin, until he threw 176 feet, 1 inch on his final throw to overtake Saint Louis' Alexander Eldridge for first place.

Edwards also set a personal best in the long jump, taking fourth place with a leap of 21-8.25.

Another highlight for the Tigers' in Friday's events came during the women's 1,500-meter run, when senior Karissa Schweizer broke the school record in her final race at Walton Stadium. She won the 1,500 with a time of 4:12.83.

The previous school record of 4:13.53 was set in 2013 by Laura Roxberg. Schweizer now holds six school records at Missouri, including the indoor mile, indoor 3,000-meter run, indoor 5,000-meter run, the outdoor 5,000 and the outdoor 10,000-meter run.

Missouri State freshman Lindsey Biesemeyer (Jefferson City High School) finished 27th in the women's 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:27.19.

In today's events, Missouri junior Will Fife (Helias High School) will compete in the men's shot put and discus. Edwards will also compete in the discus, as well as the 110-meter hurdles.
