College Track: Scrivner, Young win at Gourley Open

LIBERTY, Mo. - William Woods senior Madelyn Scrivner and Columbia College senior Grace Young each won an event Saturday at the Darrel Gourley Open, hosted by William Jewell.

Scrivner (Eldon High School) placed in the top 10 in three events, starting with a victory in the women's hammer throw with a winning distance of 158 feet. The second-place finisher was more than 15 feet behind Scrivner.

In her other events Saturday, Scrivner took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 38-0.25, ninth in the discus with a distance of 110-4.75 and 12th in the javelin with a toss of 91-11.5.

On Monday, Scrivner was named the American Midwest Conference field athlete of the week, the third time in five weeks she has received this award during in the outdoor season and the seventh time of her career.

Young (Russellville High School) took first place out of 35 competitors in the women's 1,500-meter run, clocking a time of 4:55.36 to finish two seconds ahead of runner-up Margaux Jacquet of Northwest Missouri.

Young also placed eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:28.72. William Woods freshman Harley Nale (Linn High School) finished fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:27.72.

William Jewell sophomore Lexie Stull (Jefferson City High School) finished in the top 10 in her two events. Stull placed fourth in the women's triple jump (33-11.25) and finished 10th in the long jump (15-7).

William Woods freshman Naomi Kerkula (Jefferson City High School) posted the fourth-fastest time in school history in the women's 100-meter dash with her preliminary time of 12.90 seconds. She finished seventh in the finals in 12.94.

William Woods junior Cassidy Roling (Helias High School) took eighth in the women's hammer throw (129-6) and was 24th in the discus (87-9.25). Freshman Shaley Eichholz (Eugene High School) placed 16th in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 23:12.33 for the Owls.

Westminster senior Taylor Howard (South Callaway High School) took seventh place in the women's 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.48. She also finished 11th in the triple jump (29-9.25) and 14th in the javelin (89-6.5).

Benedictine junior Veronica Wiebold (Blair Oaks High School) was 11th in the women's discus (104-9.5) and 24th in the shot put (33-1).

On the men's side, Benedictine junior Scott Brannan (School of the Osage High School) came in third place in the shot put with a throw of 47-2.5, less than two feet behind the event winner. Brannan also placed 10th in the hammer throw (125-8.75) and 14th in the discus (118-10.75).

Columbia College freshman Alex Krieg (Fatima High School) placed fifth in the 1,500 with a time of 4:10.50.

Finishing behind Krieg in the 1,500 were Columbia College junior Alex Thompson (Russellville High School) in 14th place (4:21.89), William Woods freshman Hunter Carpenter (California High School) in 15th place (4:22.66) and William Woods sophomore Matt Fringer (Russellville High School) in 25th place (4:36.77).

Thompson led the area runners in the 5,000, taking eighth place with a time of 15:54.52. Krieg took 12th place (16:23.18), while William Woods sophomore Charlie Schattgen was 18th (16:46.76) and William Woods junior Jamie Porter (Russellville High School) was 22nd (17:31.59).

William Woods sophomore Damian Miller (Russellville High School) tied for eighth place in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12-1.75.
