Lincoln's Sedeekie Edie wins NCAA Division II long jump national title

BRADENTON, Fla. - Sedeekie Edie lived up to his billing as the top seed.

The Lincoln senior won the men's long jump Thursday in the NCAA Division II Track and Field National Championships, posting a winning jump of 25 feet, 6 inches.

It's the second national title of Edie's career with the Blue Tigers and his fifth All-American honor. Edie also won the long jump title during the 2016 indoor championships.

The victory gave the Lincoln men 10 points and put the Blue Tigers in a tie for fourth place through four events in the team standings after the first day of the national championships.

Edie will compete at 2:45 p.m. today in the men's triple jump, his final collegiate competition.

The Lincoln men advanced to the finals in the 4x100-meter relay, with Roberto Smith, Stephen Rose, Jakiel David and Miguel Barton posting the fastest time in Thursday's preliminaries at 39.56 seconds.

Faedian Royes and Barton advanced to the final in the 400-meter dash, finishing fourth and sixth, respectively, in the preliminaries. Rose also placed third in the 100-meter dash prelims to reach the finals.

Coming up short in the preliminaries for the Lincoln men were David (13th) and Smith (15th) in the 100, and Darran Hunter (16th) in the 400-meter hurdles.

For the Lincoln women, Kissi-Ann Brown advanced to the finals of the 400 with a time of 54.02 seconds to finish fourth in the preliminaries.

Diana Cauldwell tied for ninth in the women's long jump with a leap of 20-3, finishing less than an inch shy of finishing in the top eight to receive All-American honors.

Kimberley Bailey placed 12th in the women's 100 preliminaries and Shanice Clarke took 15th in the 400 hurdles. Both failed to qualify for the finals.
