St. Joseph downs Renegades to take two of three

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - Free bases got the Jefferson City Renegades a 1-0 Saturday night, but the St. Joseph Mustangs scored nine runs on 12 hits with the help of free bases to win 9-3 to take two-of-three in the MINK League series.

Ty Roseberry led off the game with a single and came around to score on a passed ball and two wild pitches.

Two walks, a stolen base, a passed ball and a groundout tied it at 1 in the bottom of the first. Josh Williams added a double to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead.

St. Joseph also plated two runs in the fifth as the first four batters reached on three hit by pitches and a fielder's choice to increase the lead to 7-1.

Two of Jefferson City's six hits came in the seventh as Hunter Southerland and Hunter Swift led off with a single and double, respectively.

Southerland scored two batters later on Josh Estrada's groundout. Swift was stranded at second after an infield popop.

Roseberry, the leadoff batter, went 2-for-4. The remaining four hits came from the bottom half of the order.

Jake VanVacter earned his second win of the season as he struck out 12 in seven innings while allowing two runs, five hits and walking two.

Bradley Brown started on the hill for the Renegades, surrendering five runs and six hits with two strikeouts and four walks.

St. Joseph got three runs off Kolton Clark, who lasted 3 innings of relief. The Mustangs added a sacrifice fly in the eighth off Christian Thrasher, who got a strikeout to leave a runner at third.

Jefferson City returns home Monday for a doubleheader against the Clarinda A's. Game 1 is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Vivion Field.
