Lincoln softball suffers two one-run defeats

ST. JOSEPH - The Lincoln softball team lost a pair of one-run games Monday in Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association play, falling 1-0 and 3-2 to Missouri Western.

The Blue Tigers were held to just two hits in game one: A double by Sarah Westhoff in the second inning and a single by Macie Kinsey in the fourth. They were Lincoln's only baserunners in the game.

Missouri Western scored the game's only run with a two-out RBI double by Sydney Washington in the third inning.

Kenzie Hilzer was the winning pitcher for the Griffons, striking out three in her shutout. Madison Ragar took the loss for the Blue Tigers, scattering seven hits while walking two and striking out three in six innings.

Lincoln led for a majority of the second game, starting the contest with an RBI single by Kinsey to score Jordan Lawson in the top of the first inning.

After Missouri Western tied the game in the bottom of the first on an error, the Blue Tigers answered with another run in the second inning. With two outs, Chelsey Kerr scored from second base on a wild pitch to give the Blue Tigers a 2-1 lead.

The score would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth, when Megan Korgie and Katie Klosterman hit back-to-back RBI doubles to give the Griffons a 3-2 lead.

Lincoln stranded runners on second and third base in the top of the seventh to end the game.

Lawson had a double for Lincoln and Kinsey, Ragar, Tori Nienhueser and Maci Marshall each had one single.

Sarah Westhoff gave up three runs (two earned) on nine hits with one walk and four strikeouts in 51/3 innings in the loss.

Lincoln (5-41, 2-20 MIAA) will host Quincy in a nonconference matchup Wednesday at LU Softball Field. The Blue Tigers' final home doubleheader of the season starts at 2 p.m.
