Former Helias head coach Phil Pitts has accepted the position of defensive coordinator at Lincoln University.

Pitts was the head coach at Helias from 2011-14, leading the Crusaders to four district titles and two appearances in the Class 4 state championship game. He left Helias to be a defensive analyst at the University of Missouri for the 2015 season.

Pitts was the head coach at St. Joseph Central this fall, leading the team to a 4-6 record.

In addition, Andy Pitts will be on the Lincoln football staff as safeties coach.

Pitts is currently a graduate assistant working with defensive backs at Northwest Missouri State, which is playing in the NCAA Division II championship Saturday against North Alabama in Kansas City, Kan.

In 2015, Pitts was an assistant coach at St. Thomas (Minn.), which played in the NCAA Division III championship game. He served as the defensive coordinator under his brother at Helias.

Earlier this month, Lincoln named Steven Smith as its head football coach. Smith had previously been the offensive coordinator at Albany State (Ga.).
