Your Opinion: Reckless to relegate safety to others

Dear Editor:

While I applaud most of what the editors said Tuesday in their editorial about the rising rate of sexually transmitted infections and the importance of comprehensive sex education, the last sentence was most astute and pointed out what was otherwise missing in the analysis:

“Government can only do so much, and so can societal expectations. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of personal responsibility.”

In reality, we have to face the fact that relegating our safety to others is what is reckless. People in consensual sexual relationships would be wise to take precautions to prevent the possibility of contracting a sexually transmitted infection and not leave that up to their partners.
