Your Opinion: Abortion argument invalid

Dear Editor:

One of the newest arguments that pro-abortionists have tried to use to counter the new heartbeat bill is the comparison of an injured patient who is brain dead and on life-support. The premise they use is that the patient didn't have a living will, like the fetus, and therefore the decision is then up to the parents, with the advice of doctors as to whether or not to remove the patient from life support. Many see this as a very intelligent argument and try to rationalize or even counter it unsuccessfully. Mainly because they are ignoring a teeny tiny little blue whale that is filling the room. In order for this analogy to even be close there is one fact that everyone is missing, and that is the patient's brain inactivity is only temporary. An example, the inactivity is caused by brain inflammation that will subside over time. As the inflammation subsides, brain activity will increase and the patient can safely be removed from life-support in about seven to nine months. After which there will be a year or two of therapy to help the patient to learn how to feed themselves, talk and walk. No one in their right mind would even remotely suggest that in this scenario one should deny the patient life-support. Especially not on the grounds that their parents would not be able to financially provided for the patient nor because of the struggle and possible quality of life the patient might have later on. Yet, pro-abortionists use this argument all the time. When we begin to realize that brain activity, feeling of pain etc are only temporary situations with a very clear positive prognosis one then would not logically nor morally make any choice to remove life-support from said patient. For those that say "no one can force me to us my body to maintain someone's life support," if you are the cause for putting the patient on life support in the first place you are liable for their health care and you don't get the option to terminate their life. Ask any drunk driver; they don't get to choose to terminate their victims' life-support.
