Your Opinion: GOP disappoint with Greitens' witch hunt

Dear Editor:

As a lifelong Missourian, I have always felt pride in the belief that our elected officials valued integrity, decency and the desire to do good. I had the assumption that, as an elected official, the duty to serve would always supersede attempts to selfishly fulfill prideful ambition. However, as of a couple months ago, when the Greitens witch hunt gained momentum, my beliefs have been crippled.

The attempt to impeach Gov. Eric Greitens based on the findings of a prematurely sparked special report seems to be suspicious at best. At worst, it appears to be the worst form of special interest by a group of people who seem to be neglecting the general consensus of their constituents and are instead following a path they hope will lead to personal gain.

Why on earth was a special report and special session deemed necessary while the case was yet to be determined by the courts. Something smells fishy and I would dare say all voting Missourians smell it. Why couldn't we have waited to see what became of the charge, which since has been dismissed?

As a fellow Republican, I feel deeply upset by my party's actions and what seem to be knee-jerk reactions to a situation, although distasteful and morally wrong on Greitens' behalf, appearing to be a springboard by which power-hungry elected officials intend to use for personal gain.

I urge all Missourians to take notice of the words and actions of our current elected officials. If it appears to you as it does me, to be self-motivated and completely out of proportion to what the trial will produce, to carefully consider whether this is the caliber of people we want to re-elect during the next election.
