Your Opinion: Lawmakers should stop government giveaways

Dear Editor:

The News Tribune dated Wednesday, March 7, 2018, included an article which stated Rep. Elaine Gannon sponsored House Bill 1606. It would require the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to subsidize the exam fee for all first-time test-takers of the High School Equivalency Test, or HiSET. The cost is $95.

I feel that it is important that students take and pass this test; however, if the test-takers have a cellphone, and mostly everyone does, then they can pay for their own test. Cellphones are not cheap. If they can afford a cellphone, they can afford to pay for the test.

I, as a taxpayer, am getting sick of all of the giveaway programs, and I know I am not the only one. You representatives should be trying to find ways to save taxpayers' money inside of always trying to find ways to charge the taxpayers more.
