Your Opinion: Free internet not in the cards

Dear Editor:

Bert Dirschell's Letter to the Editor (March 4) was way off the mark. Missouri Farm Bureau members visited the State Capitol recently to talk with legislators about priorities such as the need for greater access to broadband throughout the state. Missouri ranks 42nd in the nation in connectivity, and 1.2 million people lack access to a wired broadband connection capable of 25 megabits per second. Only 16 percent of the state has access to fiber optic service, technology capable of standing the test of time.

Our members weren't there to ask for "free stuff": not free water, free television, free sidewalks or a free trail. They did ask that legislators look for ways to make broadband more readily accessible. No one will be forced to use the internet, and those wanting the technology will pay the provider a monthly fee no different than for telephone or electric service.

Mr. Dirschell would be wise to research broadband access and providers before making broad statements about access. Much will be gained by greater access to reliable, high-quality broadband, and we're grateful for legislators' efforts.
