Your Opinion: No driving through public campground?

Dear Editor:

Sunday, July 28, we were driving through Binder Lake Park when we decided to take a turn around the campground. Unfortunately there were some red and white barricades and a sign that said something to the effect of "No driving through the campground allowed." Now I know four senior citizens in a van wearing normal Sunday clothes can be quite intimidating and dangerous looking, but we didn't expect to be told to "Stop and turn around" by the Gestapo guard, I mean Campground Host.

In my almost 80 years, I have never been to a public campground in the United States or Canada where I have not been allowed to check out the campsites or merely look at the various types of campers being utilized.

As a tax-paying citizen of Jefferson City, I would like to know the authority and/or reason for this situation. If there has been an inordinate number of thefts or vandalism, perhaps the campground host could use some discretion and take down the license number of suspicious looking people like us.

This needs the immediate attention of someone in the Jefferson City Parks Dept.!
