Your Opinion: Medicare for all

Dear Editor:

Imagine a country where companies can afford to pay their employees more because they are not paying enormous amounts to insurance companies for their workers health care, where employees have more income resulting in families and communities with more income giving them options and resources to be healthier, happier and stronger. How? Medicare for All.

Imagine that you stay employed because you want to work, like to work and not because you need health care and must stay in a job you hate or don't care about because you are not 65 yet. How? Medicare for All.

Imagine having your eye glasses and dental care being covered by your health insurance unlike today, being able to get the care you need as opposed to the care you can afford, not needing to make decisions between food and prescriptions, not worrying about how you will be able to take care of any serious health crisis. How? Medicare for All.

Imagine no longer paying tens of thousands of dollars for health insurance, deductibles, and co-payments for a health insurance policy that likely won't cover all of your care needs. How? Medicare for All.

We have an opportunity to move America forward by passing the Medicare for All legislation filed in the U.S. Senate yesterday. Can you imagine if the opponents to Medicare in the '60s had won the argument and we did not have Medicare today? I can't even begin to. Let's not be those opponents, like ostriches with their heads in the sand. We need to get this done for our families, our businesses, our community, for America.

Neither U.S. Sen. Blunt nor McCaskill are co-sponsors of this bill, which would give us the health care system we need. Call their D.C. offices today and tell them they are wrong to not be a co-sponsor and you won't support them in their next elections until they are. If you want to know more about health care reform and a way to fix the problems join members of the community at the library from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 26 to view the film: "Fix It."
