Your Opinion: Old St. Mary's TIF - Welfare for the wealthy

Dear Editor:

Welfare for the wealthy continues in Jefferson City. The result is that the rich grow richer and the poor pay for it. Farmer Brothers are asking for more of our taxes to rehab the old St. Mary's building. The following will not be considered by the TIF Commission or the City Council:

It is easy to design a plan that is too expensive to pay for itself. They should be able to finance any project they design.

Retail is a very poor investment because internet sales are taking business from retail stores. Stores like Sears, Macy's, Penney's, Target, and others are closing stores just to keep other stores open. Vacant stores on Missouri Boulevard were formerly occupied by Mosers, Kmart, Hastings, and Golden China Restaurant. Why should taxpayers pay to build more?

No signs are currently posted in TIF financed buildings informing customers that they pay extra sales taxes that go to the developer.

The Farmer Brothers will make a lot of money selling products such as brick, asphalt, and concrete to their own projects paid with tax money.

How can Lincoln University be counted on to open a facility in the Farmers' building? State colleges are laying off people and increasing cost to students.

The people whose sensibilities are offended by a vacant building should remember that Jefferson City government will take over private property. Complain to your mayor.

Voters should vote on any new tax. This will not happen because it will likely be defeated.

The TIF Commission and Council will approve taxes for The Farmer Brothers because of who they are and not the viability of their project.

I challenge the TIF Commission and the City Council to prove me wrong.
