Your Opinion: Recognizing Equal Pay Day

Dear Editor:

In April, I wrote a letter calling attention to Equal Pay Day, the day on which the average woman's pay since Jan. 1 2016 caught up with what the average white man had been paid in calendar year 2016. Because women are systematically paid less than men, it takes us well over a year to earn what men earn in one year, after controlling for education, field, experience and seniority. Remember, that April date applied to the average woman.

Tuesday, May 23 is the date that the average woman who is a mother working full time outside the home finally catches up to what the average man who is a father earned in calendar year 2016. This "motherhood penalty" is unjust and unfair. It could be remedied if the U.S. Congress would pass The Paycheck Fairness Act, The Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act, and the Equal Rights Amendment.

Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer and Senator Roy Blunt show no concern for fair treatment of women and families.
