Your Opinion: Yes on J & C

Dear Editor:

I have lived in Jefferson City for over 30 years. I have seen the changes made to our district and have followed the progress made in Columbia. Our district is behind in space, educational materials and the ability to support our children like they should be supported.

Now is the Time - our freshman students are in a 100-plus-year-old building not designed for today's curricular and instructional methods. We must act now or conditions will worsen and our kids won't have the same opportunities as children in other communities and improvements will only cost more in future years; as a community, we can wait no longer.

Invest in Our Children and Community - making this investment in children now will pay dividends as generation after generation of high school graduates will be either job ready or capable of success in higher education.

Now is a great time to invest in our schools because of low interest rates - the cost of needed improvements will continue to increase and it is highly probable that interest rates will increase.

Passing this proposal now will allow us to fully implement a facility improvement plan by making improvements at the elementary and middle school levels with no-tax-rate increase proposals that could be placed on the ballot within just a few years.

Vote Yes to Education and Growth - if we don't take steps right now to support this solution we are turning our backs on our community and on the educational needs of our children; our kids need and deserve the same type of educational opportunities that children are receiving all across the state.

It is our responsibility - no one is going to come in and take care of the problem for us; in Missouri funding for education is primarily a local responsibility. It is time to step up for our kids, for our home values, and for our community and pass Propositions J & C.

My child and her classmates are part of the fourth-grade classrooms that with spill into trailers when she reaches her freshman year of high school. They deserve a quality education, un-crowded classrooms, new textbooks and a curriculum that rivals that of our surrounding districts. We cannot provide any of this without voting "yes" to J & C on April 4, 2017.

This is very important, please vote "yes" on J & C.
